Jimmy Page & Robert Plant - Gallows Pole (1994)

This is based on an old blues song called "Gallis Pole," which was popularized by Leadbelly. The song is considered "traditional," meaning the author is unknown.
Jimmy Page got the idea after hearing the version by the California folk singer Fred Gerlach. Page explained when previewing the song for Melody Maker: "He was one of the first white people on Folkways records to get involved in Leadbelly.
We have completely rearranged it and changed the verse.
Robert wrote a set of new lyrics. That's John Paul Jones on mandolin and bass, and I'm playing the banjo, 6-string acoustic, 12-string and electric guitar. The bloke swinging on the gallows pole is saying wait for his relatives to arrive. The drumming builds nicely."

In 1994, Page and Plant re-recorded this in Wales for their album No Quarter. On that version, Page played a hurdy-gurdy, an odd instrument resembling an organ grinder that sounds like a bagpipe.
The lyrics are about a man trying to delay his hanging until his friends and family can rescue him. Although there are many versions of this song, Led Zeppelin's is unusual in that it ends with the hangman hanging the protagonist despite all of his bribes. Most other versions end with the hangman setting the protagonist free.
Jimmy Page has claimed this as his favorite song on Led Zeppelin III. The band used some lyrics from this song on their 1975 track "Trampled Underfoot."

Simon & Garfunkel - Silent Night / Seven O'Clock News (1970)

"7 O'Clock News/Silent Night" is a song by American music duo Simon & Garfunkel from their third studio album, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (1966).
The track is a sound collage juxtaposing a rendition of the Christmas carol "Silent Night" with a simulated "7 O'Clock News" bulletin consisting of actual events from the summer of 1966.
The track is a sound collage and simply constructed: it consists of the duo singing "Silent Night" in two-part harmony over an arpeggiated piano section.
The voice of the newscaster is that of Charlie O'Donnell, who was then a radio disc jockey. As the track progresses, the news report assumes a greater presence through an increase in volume. "The result rather bluntly makes an ironic commentary on various social ills by juxtaposing them with tenderly expressed Christmas sentiments."
The mix on the track purposefully clashes with the piano accompaniment mixed solely to the left channel and the news solely to the right channel while vocals remain in the middle.

Chicago Transit Authority - I'm A Man (1969)

"I'm a Man" is a song written by Steve Winwood and record producer Jimmy Miller. It was first recorded in 1967 by the Spencer Davis Group; Winwood sang lead vocals and played keyboards.

Chicago (then known as Chicago Transit Authority) recorded a cover version of "I'm a Man" for their 1969 debut album, The Chicago Transit Authority. When the band's popularity surged after their second album, "I'm a Man" was released as the B-side to a re-release of "Questions 67 and 68".
Radio stations ended up playing both sides, and "I'm a Man" reached No. 49 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1971.

AC/DC - Shot In The Dark (2020)

"Shot In The Dark" is the lead single from AC/DC's 17th studio album, Power Up. It's not the most original title (Ozzy Osbourne released his "Shot In The Dark" in 1986), but it's a welcome return for the band, their first new song since losing original guitarist Malcolm Young to dementia in 2017.
This shot in the dark certainly made AC/DC fans feel alright.

The album is a reunion of sorts for AC/DC as it marks the return of Brian Johnson (vocals), Phil Rudd (drums) and Cliff Williams (bass); all three previously exited the group as the result of hearing loss, legal issues and retirement, respectively, in the mid-2010s.
They join founding member Angus Young (guitar) and his nephew Stevie Young (rhythm guitar) on the record – the same lineup that recorded the band's previous long player, 2014's Rock Or Bust.

Robbie Robertson - Fallen Angel (1987)

This song is an elegy to Richard Manuel, who along with Robbie Robertson, was one of the original members of The Band. Manuel, who was the Band's pianist and sometimes vocalist, was found hanging in the bathroom of a motel room in Winter Park, Florida on March 4, 1986.
The group had re-formed (without Robertson) and played in Winter Park, Florida the preceding night. Manuel had serious problems with addiction for most of his life, but got sober when The Band started touring again in the '80s.
He began abusing drugs and alcohol again in 1985, which likely contributed to his death.

"Fallen Angel" was the first single Robertson released as a solo artist. He wrote the song with Martin Page, who had co-written the hits "These Dreams" and "We Built This City."
In our interview with Page, he explained: "Robbie was playing with lyrical ideas for a huge period of time and every time I would go back to the Village (the recording studio in Los Angeles) to work with him, it was quite frustrating, because I thought we were doing very well and he'd say, 'I've changed the words.'
He would sing it and ask me, 'What do you think?' And I'd say, 'Well, I think it's all good, Rob. Really good.' Everything he did I thought was fine.
But then one special day he called me and he said, 'I really have what this song's about.' At first it was going to be called 'War of Angels,' and it was going to be the idea of fallen angels actually falling out of heaven and touching hell. He was really getting into this kind of biblical place.
But all of a sudden, very emotionally he said to me, 'It's about Richard.' And I could see in his face that he'd nailed it. It was his special song to Richard Manuel. I think it was a great testament to his undying friendship for his friend who left a little too early."
This song features Peter Gabriel on keyboards. Gabriel also provides vocals on the chorus accompanying Robbie Robertson.

Radiohead - No Surprises (1997)

"No Surprises" is a song by the English rock band Radiohead, released as the fourth and final single from their third studio album, OK Computer (1997), in 1998. It was also released as a mini-album in Japan, titled No Surprises / Running from Demons.
The singer, Thom Yorke, wrote "No Surprises" while Radiohead were on tour with R.E.M. in 1995.
It features glockenspiel and a "childlike" sound inspired by the 1966 Beach Boys album Pet Sounds. Yorke described it as a "fucked-up nursery rhyme", with a gentle mood and harsh lyrics conveying dissatisfaction with social or political order.
The music video, directed by Grant Gee, features Yorke wearing a helmet as it fills with water, inspired by the 1960s science fiction and underwater escape acts. Inspired by the lyric "a job that slowly kills you", Gee conceived a video that would convey the feeling of "murderous seconds".

"No Surprises" was released as the fourth single from OK Computer and reached number four on the UK singles chart. In 2011, NME named "No Surprises" the 107th-best track of the preceding 15 years.

Shakira feat. Carlos Santana - Illegal (2006)

"Illegal" is a song recorded by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira for her seventh studio album, Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (2005).
It was written and produced by Shakira and Lester Mendez and it features Mexican-American guitarist Carlos Santana. Epic Records released the song as the second (third overall) and final single from the reissue edition of the album on 28 August 2006, following the release of "Hips Don't Lie". "Illegal" is a pop and country ballad with lyrics concerning mourning of a past lover complete with an understated vocal performance by Shakira and an electric guitar riff by Santana throughout.

"Illegal" is a ballad with lyrics revolving around mourning for the loss of a lover, as seen in the lines, "It should be illegal to deceive a woman's heart".
It contains elements of pop and country music. Spence D. of the website IGN felt that Shakira adopted an "almost modern day country-styled pop aesthetic". Throughout the song, her vocals are subdued, complete with "rolling delivering, breathy accentuations, and... trill".
AllMusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine noted that the lyrics "You said you would love me until you died/And as far as I know you're still alive" were similar to Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" (1995).
"Illegal" was written and produced by Shakira and Lester Mendez, with all additional production handled by Jose "Gacho" Torres. Mexican guitarist Carlos Santana appears as a featured artist on the song, playing an electrical guitar throughout.
The guitar was also played by Lyle Workman. The other instruments featured in the song are keyboards played by Lester Mendez, bass by Paul Bushnell, drums by Shawn Pelton and percussion by Luis Contez. The mixing was done by Rob Jacobs while the audio engineering was finished by Kevin Killen, Serge "Sergical" Tsai and Vlado Meller, who mastered the song with the assistance of Mark Santangelo

U2 - Every Breaking Wave (2014)

"Every Breaking Wave" is a song by Irish rock band U2. It is the second track from their thirteenth studio album, Songs of Innocence, and was released as its second single. It was produced by Danger Mouse and Ryan Tedder, with additional production from Declan Gaffney.

Lead vocalist Bono said that the band began recording "Every Breaking Wave" in Sydney, Australia, but "then it went down the drain for seven years, up the arse, as these things do."
The song was originally intended to be included on U2's 2009 studio album No Line on the Horizon. In an article previewing the album several weeks before release, Rolling Stone called the song a "swelling soul-pop song, with bright synth sounds influenced by OMD".
However, the track was ultimately left off the album at the advice of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who told the band that the song "deserves to be finished." Speaking of material the band were working on, Bono said the song was producer Jimmy Iovine's favorite. Bono mentioned tentative plans for the group to release a follow-up record, Songs of Ascent, comprising songs from No Line's recording sessions, and said that the first single was intended to be "Every Breaking Wave".
However, the project was continually delayed, as U2 struggled to complete an album to their satisfaction and were limited by other commitments.

When the group resumed their U2 360° Tour in August 2010, they debuted "Every Breaking Wave" with a live performance, making it one of several unreleased tracks to be debuted. As the band continued recording for their next studio album, the song was altered; after Ryan Tedder was brought on as a co-producer in 2013, the song was one of the tracks that he changed most, as he introduced a new chorus melody and moved the old one to the song's bridge.

Bono described the song as being about the difficulty of "giv[ing] yourself completely to another person", with lyrical characters who are "addicted to sort of failure and rebirth". He referred to the chorus lines "Every dog on the street / Knows we're in love with defeat / Are we ready to be swept off our feet / And stop chasing every breaking wave" as a chance for the characters of two lovers to "make a break for it". A previous version of the song included the lines "After every peak, the trough / I can feel the energy drop / Will we ever know when to stop / With this chasing every breaking wave", which Bono said "has a certain despair that's powerful."

An acoustic version of the song, recorded in Malibu, California, was included on the deluxe version of the album. This version features the Edge on piano and an orchestra accompaniment written by David Richard Campbell.
